FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

GENERAL

What is The Colour Four?

The Colour Four is an ongoing body of conceptual artwork exploring intelligence, reality, perception, technology, and human experience. Drawing from fields including artificial intelligence, physics, cosmology, psychology, philosophy, and architecture, each work begins with a conceptual phrase that is translated into a visual form through a range of printmaking, photographic, and digital processes.

Are the artworks part of a larger series?

Yes. Individual works often belong to broader thematic collections that investigate interconnected ideas. While each artwork can be appreciated independently, the collections collectively form an evolving landscape of concepts and visual relationships.

Are the artworks original?

All artworks originate from original concepts, compositions, and image development processes created by The Colour Four. Depending on the work, editions may be produced using traditional printmaking techniques, photographic processes, digital methods, or combinations of these approaches. AI was not used to create, compose or develop any of the artworks.

Why are the artworks accompanied by conceptual phrases?

Each artwork begins with a conceptual phrase that acts as a point of departure rather than an explanation. These phrases function as catalysts for visual exploration, translating abstract ideas relating to intelligence, perception, reality, technology, and human experience into material form. The artworks are intended to remain open to interpretation, allowing multiple readings to coexist.

ARTISTIC PROCESS

How are the artworks created?

Each work begins as a conceptual phrase, proposition, or question. The concept is developed through research, writing, drawing, photography, digital modelling, image construction, or printmaking techniques before being translated into a final physical artwork.

What is an etching?

Etching is a traditional intaglio printmaking process in which an image is drawn into a protective ground applied to a metal plate. The plate is then exposed to acid, which bites into the exposed lines. Ink is worked into these etched marks and printed under pressure onto paper.

What is photogravure?

Photogravure is a photographic intaglio process that transfers a photographic image onto a metal plate. The image is etched into the plate and printed using traditional printmaking methods. Photogravure combines the tonal depth of photography with the tactile qualities of handmade printmaking.

What is a giclée print?

A giclée print is a high-quality fine art print produced using archival pigment inks and professional printing systems. These prints are valued for their colour accuracy, detail, and long-term stability when displayed and stored under appropriate conditions.

What are laser-engraved works?

Laser engraving uses a highly focused beam of light to precisely remove or alter material on various surfaces. This process enables the creation of detailed images, text, and geometric structures on a range of media.

What is collage?

Collage is the construction of an image through the combination of multiple visual elements, materials, photographs, textures, or printed fragments. In The Colour Four, collage may exist as either a physical process, a digital process, or a combination of both.

Why use different techniques?

Different concepts often require different material approaches. The chosen process becomes part of the meaning of the work, allowing ideas concerning memory, technology, perception, systems, materiality, and human experience to be explored through distinct visual and physical forms.

Do I own the copyright when I purchase a work?
